Look To The Stars

Take a walk with me.
Sphuul’s tattered ears pricked as the melodic voice spoke, and he turned, already knowing who it was but wondering why such a sentence was uttered. Nova was gliding towards him, seemingly weightless as her feet touched the ground without a sound. She gave him a small, reassuring smile, then stopped, cocking her head slightly. She was waiting for a response. He glanced up towards the sky, bleeding orange as the sun faded with the edge of the horizon. Night would be upon them soon, and with it, the weight of the universe. Nova was cutting it a little close tonight. As Sphuul’s eyes met hers once more, she gave a knowing smile, almost impish enough to be considered a smirk. His hidden mouth lifted a little, and he slowly nodded.
Thank you.” She began to walk once more, passing him as he turned to follow. Walking alongside each other, they remained mostly silent for several minutes. It was not an uncomfortable silence, as it often was with others. Nova understood Sphuul in a way no one else had, and was able to read his thoughts almost perfectly. There was no need for speech, not now. They topped a small hill, Sphuul trailing a few steps behind, observing the scenery around him. Shadows were lengthening, and the bright hues that had lit their path only minutes before were darkening, blues fading to black.
Nova stopped, and he followed suit, waiting patiently for her to speak. She glanced at him, then sat, watching his face as her voice broke the silence. “This is my favorite spot to come, at night. Open, close to the sky... It helps me… see, sometimes.” Her brow furrowed for a miniscule moment, before smoothing out once again. “It’s hard to explain, but I’d like to try to do so.” Sphuul’s brows lifted, surprised. Nova usually kept to herself after dusk, only returning with the sun. She accompanied him during the day, filling the void of time with her musings. She alone would tolerate him and his encumbering silence. They had grown close over the short time they had known each other, and he felt a brotherly bond towards the galactic female. But he spent nights alone, often wondering where his companion had disappeared to.
He sat across from her, inviting her to continue. But she didn’t. Her gaze rose to the moon mounting the sky, and as he watched, the color in her eyes began to disappear. Light emanated from her sockets, until it was almost too bright to look at. Sphuul leaned towards her, pressing his nose softly to her shoulder. It was a question. Are you okay? Nova, although her sight seemed to be gone, understood perfectly. “Don’t worry. I’m perfectly alright. Get comfortable, Sphuul, and I will explain this to you.” Confused but compliant, he lowered himself until his chest settled on the grass, legs stretched out in front of him. His eyes never left her as she slowly stood, and opened her mouth to speak. “Every night, my vision disappears. I can no longer see anything. But at the same time, I can see… Everything.”
Her gazeless eyes moved to him. “I cannot see your face, but I can see you. Your soul, the essence that is you, looking back at me. I see your heart beat, I see the air from your lungs, growing cold as it leaves your body.” She pointed herself back to the sky. “I do not see the light of the stars, but I see their beginning, their end. The darkness that swallowed everything before their arrival, and the chaos that is their death, as they explode into a million pieces of light and rock. Time is tangible for me, in this state of mine. I am not limited to the present. The past, the future, is all visible to me. I see terrible things, things that I cannot even begin to describe. But there is also beauty. The things you and I deem beautiful when the sun is up cannot be compared to what I can see now.”
An enchanting smile broke the stillness on her face as she continued to stare into the night, mesmerized by the universe within her mind. The fire from his tail outlined her delicate features, bringing the smile into view for Sphuul. She continued to murmur softly, giving him details of the things only she could see. He too glanced at the sky, imagining the wonders that she spoke of. Small trickles of blood dripped down his stained cheeks, his eyes now glistening with starlight.
